HELP!! i think i have ruined my brew

Post by beesley121 » Mon Jun 16, 2008 12:55 pm

Hi guys,

just made myself an EDME stout kit but When I mixed all the sugar and extract together and then topped it up to 22 litres, I mistakenly switch my tap on so that it dumped 19 litres of hot water into the bucket instead of 19 litres cold water.

im worried I may have added infected water!! i have a combi boiler, not a tank hot water system if that makes any differance. The wort is now sitting at approx 50 degree c and its in a bath of cold water to get the temp down so I can pitch the yeast

have i ruined my brew??

Just having moved from a back boiler to a combi boiler I have been told by my plumber that a Combi shoudl only use mains (drinking) water.

However, there is no accounting for what may be pre-existing in the hot-water piping set-up.

Ruined? Don't know - let it ferment out and see?

Repeat the Mantra RDWHAHB,

The only slight issue you could have had is that you will have added water with Chlorine in it (heating is not that good at driving off chlorine especially Chloramine) . . . but as you were going to use the cold water tap anyway that is obviously not a concern for you.

At least you realised before you added the yeast, just cool the wort and pitch the yeast . . . you can pitch at 25C and continue cooling

I doubt if there are any nasties in your hot water piping . . . certainly not any beer spoilage ones . . . you will be increasing the risk of infection the longer you leave it with no yeast pitched. Get it cool and get them in there!

Last time I did that, I left the bath running, and discovered that the overflow wasn't connected . . . . Was downstairs in the kitchen when water started pouring through the ceiling . . . ."I doesn't normally Rain Indoors" . . . ."Shit"

You should be fine IF your combi is mains driven like a good combi should be, as for chloramines it might not matter that much and if you get that TCP taste you'll make sure to not make the same mistake next time :D
