water filters reducing alkalinity?

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

water filters reducing alkalinity?

Post by jubby » Thu Jun 19, 2008 5:39 pm

I have been using Daab's alkalinity testing kit which works extremely well. My mash ph is spot on 5.2.

Having recently fitted a single stage point of use water filter made by Pozzani, I have retested for alkalinity and it has halved. The blurb says that it removes heavy metals, chlorine, pesticides bla bla bla. Anyway, I am concerned that it is removing stuff that's good for beer. The model number is IX600.

Anybody know if lowering the alkalinity is normal for these filters and if it's removing stuff that is good for beer? Until now I have used CRS to treat the water. Should I be using DLS and CRS with this filter. I have read Brupaks info on the use of these, but it is a bit vague.

The blurb for the filter talks about an ion exchange component. That might be affecting the alkalinity.

I asked Pozzani about the ion exchange stuff and they sent me these links.

If there are others out there with these water filters, check the links and use one of these cartridges.

No, the filter cartridge that came with the kit was a super duper one that did the ion exchange thing.

It's not as bad as i thought, I only have to change the filter cartridge for the charcoal type.

I still owe you for the testing kit DaaB.
