crusader down the sink

Post by pongobilly » Wed Jun 25, 2008 5:03 pm

had to put my milestone crusader down the sink, all was well until it started to condition in my wilkos budget barrel, the wilkos barrel went all out of shape and started to leak badly from the tap seal and i had nothing to transfer too, typical because this is the most succesfull beer i have done to date regarding fermentation, it also tasted great, so im gonna get meself another decent barel and avoid wilkos stuff from now on,

anyone got any decent barrels to get rid of

shit, bad news! Go with bottles. They don't leak, just a ball ache to sanitise etc.

its a bummer that its already gone.

In an emergency situation ive always had the fizzy mineral water pet bottles on standby (when i say standby what i actually mean is id go out and get some)

if at first you dont succeed, get pixxed!

King keg with a top tap ! Really good barrel and in another league as the bugdet ones. You just gotta look at it and think how long its going to last, your spending money to save money imo

One or two have had problems with the Wilko's kegs. Following someone else's advice i've successfully used ptfe on the thread which has stopped it from spurting out from around the seal when the pressure gets a bit too much. Other than that i've never had a problem with my KK.

Supermarket "value" lemonade is 20p for a two litre bottle, so for £2.20 you can bottle cheaply and 11 bottles isn't a lot to sanitise.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

Take it back to the buggers and demand a refund, its obviously not fit for purpose. Take your refund add some to it and get yourself some cornies, you won't regret it :D

I'd invest in a corni keg and use john guest fittings.
I spent a fortune on placcy barrels.. I have 5 of them, and paid full price for them all.. I could have had the same number of corni's for that.
I'm trying to sell my placcy stuff now but I'll not get what I paid for them..
It's hard to know when you start homebrewing whether you'll stick with it.
You also learn about these things as you do it.
But if I had my time again.. I'd start out with a big layout for proper kit.

I've just had a similar experience yesterday with my cheap barrel. Got home and went to go and get myself a pint but noticed the carpet down there was abit wet. Only about 1 pint had leaked out so far but it was hissing out around the tap and when I checked the bottom is had started to bow out and lift it off the floor.

What pee'd me off even more though was when I checked the valve, I pulled the bit of rubber down and it vented fine. Pulled a pint and vented it out of the valve at the top until it was happy again. So it seems the tap leaks and the bottom pops out even before the valve releases the pressure ! rubbish !

Lessons learnt though until I can replace them, it was TC in this barrel so I must have overprimed it. Used Tesco apple juice this time and it must have a higher suger content or something
