Second Brew - Body

Post by leigh1919 » Fri Jun 27, 2008 7:16 pm

hi guys -

Been away for a while but before I left brewed up a milestone kit - lion's pride.
Bottled what i had, and conditioned cold for about a week, then warm for a couple.

The beer looks the part, has a nice, pleasing pop when you pop the cap, has an ok mouthfeel but...no body. Even smells good - although a little 'lagery'.

Im keen to move up to extract/grain brewing , but am cutting my teeth on kits, so will be doing another one in a week or so's time, probably stick to Milestone if i can find them.

any suggestions on how i can improve body, or if any of you have had the same problem?

thanks fellas - don't know what i'd do without you....

By body do you mean it's flat? Looks like you might have got the conditioning the wrong way round.
It should be warm conditioned to start with to let the priming sugars ferment and create CO2, then cold conditioned to mature.

What are you using as additional fermentables for the kits? Cut out any table sugar and use malt extract instead.

Try using a less attenuative yeast like Safale SO4 or Windsor.

I've heard of people dissolving maltodextrin into their beer to boost the body but I tried this once and the mouthfeel was quite odd, thick and syrupy almost.

Although you do say the mouthfeel is ok but the body isn't... I would usually equate these to be the same thing.

hi -

sorry got a bit mixed up, i did warm condition first, then cold! well spotted!

by body i mean no tate, really. It isnt flat, just doesnt really taste of anything, no hoppiness or maltiness. it looks the part, just doesnt taste of anything.

as for sugars, i used Glucose?
