Visiting from Canada. Looking for British hops in London

Post by selair » Sat Jun 28, 2008 5:19 am

Hello all. First post here.

I am from Victoria BC Canada, and will be visiting London this coming week. I am looking to get my hands on some British hops while I am in town. Are there any homebrew supply stores in or near downtown London? I will be using the transit system.

Thanks in advance for the help.

It's not my patch so I can't answer that I'm afraid.
What I can suggest is that you order online from a UK shop and have the hops (and the inevitable other bits you'll no doubt impulse buy  we all do it!) delivered to wherever you're staying. There are lots of shops online, personally I'm using Hop and Grape at the moment and find their deliveries quite prompt. It would be worth explaining to them you need them by ?whatever? date to ensure they reach you in time.

PS, What are you planning to brew?

I seem to remeber a similar thread some time back, and a classic remark re that taking your own marigolds (rubber gloves) might be an idea when the nice customs man finds lots of aromatic green stuff in your cases (its even in a related family - I wonder if snffer dogs know this!)

Near Rayners Lane tube station:
Yes, he's still there. I go up there every so often as it's only two stops on the Piccadilly Line from me. Out of the station, turn left down the hill, and it's at the bottom on the right-hand side (the eastern side of the road).

Mr Ray Nicklin is a lovely man, and you can spend far too much time just chatting at the counter. He can get in anything from the Young's catalogue for you.

NB there is also an excellent photographic shop - SRS - just up the road from him!
NB Are you allowed to import vegetable items in person? I know you can't take anything like that, even an uneaten apple, into the United States as they're paranoid about things like the Colorado Beetle. Internet or mail order might be safer - you don't want to have to dump several pounds-worth of hops at the Customs desk.

Yeah, I had thought about the customs issue. I figured it would be worth the risk. If they made it an issue I would just do whatever made them happy...even if I had to dump-em. :(
about how much does an ounce (28g) of EKG's go for these days over there?

Cheers

Selair (hello from NB)

You may want to ship them.
Shipping is pretty reasonable from UK to The United States and Canada may not be much more (could be less)

Around $5.00 US dollar to ship a 1lb package and it only takes 4 or 5 days

Or you could get them from Craftbrewer in Australia for a similar amount of money.

You could of course buy them here from the various shops/breweries then post them to yourself, therefore avoiding any extra curricular orifice inspections at heathrow.

Just a thought.
