Ultimate Lager Kit?

Post by RbrewR » Mon Jul 07, 2008 6:35 pm

I'm looking to start a batch of lager and have so far read a mass of advice on here. I'm after something around the 5% mark that will convince the doubters about homebrew. Thought i'de start a bit of a bun fight  and ask advice on whats the best Lager kit, to use kit enhancer or not, premium kit worth the money?

Best is always very subjective... I've done the Muntons Continental Pilsner a couple of times with good results. Changed the yeast for S23 and fermented at around 12c.

Coopers lager was quite good iirc. These days I would probably add hops etc but it was fine the way it was.

Brupaks Beers of the world - Czech or Bavarian Pilsner Fermented at 12C with a couple of Sachets of S23

The Brewers Choice Czech Pilsner is a good choice for a dry kit ;)

Steeping additional Czech Saaz in the cooling wort will help boost the hop profile

I recently did a Brewferm Gold with light Belgian candy sugar & S23 and I must say that it's definitely one I'll be doing again.

Bottle conditioned and getting better all the time, benefits from over 3 months maturation. Only thing I'd change is to double up on the kit as it's only 12 ltr.

It ticks all the boxes.

I've recently done a Coopers lager (made with beer enhancer from Wilkos) - so far it's been bottled & had a week of carbonating & a week conditioning in the garage. I tasted one Sunday night & it was pretty good - to my taste it's currently more like a golden ale than a lager but a nice taste - I'm sure it'll only get better. According to my hydrometer readings it should be about 5.6%!

I've just bottled 40 pints of Edme Pilsner which is a lot lighter in colour than the Coopers. I'll report back in couple of weeks as to how that is.

Coopers lager is a good bet.

Stay away from Geordie. I've done his twice now, only because I messed up the first batch, but that was through inexperience. But its pretty weak in flavour.
