This may be a silly question but what gear do i NEED to have to go all grain brew?
I have a 30 ltr stockpot and 24 litre coolbox which im in middle of converting to a mashtun
i already had loads of tubing , FVs, hydros, thermometers etc from previous extract brews, is there anything else obvious that im missing?
what gear?
If you're going to use gas, then the stockpot is ok as is, a tap on it would be helpful, if you are using leccy, then a couple of elements/leads in the pot will be needed.
Have you got some way of separating the hops from the wort in the boiler? a hop bag, a false bottom or another copper manifold will be required here. Some users say that using a bag restricts the battering the hops get during a boil and therefore get less extraction.
Some way of sparging? if you are batch sparging you'll not need anything, but you can still get sparge arms and those spray things if you prefer.
Optional extra would be another stockpot/plastic boiler to act as a HLT, not essential but helps a great deal as yo're not using your boiler for this as well.
Welcome to the 'darkside', have fun with your first one.

What a silly question........ I'm glad you asked it 'cos I was wondering the same thing tooDuncndisorderly wrote:This may be a silly question but what gear do i NEED to have to go all grain brew?

Looks like I need to hold off for a while as I seem to be short of a quite a few things.

What i thought id try in an effort to avoid this problem is making up a hop bag using curtain voil, im basically gonna make a bag much larger than what i need in the hope that the extra room gives the hops as much room as neccesary, if that fails im gonna make a false botttom from a canabalised fv lid full of little holes on the end of a pole and treat it like a big caffetiere thingyGarth wrote:..........Have you got some way of separating the hops from the wort in the boiler? a hop bag, a false bottom or another copper manifold will be required here.
