Summer Lightningishish
Summer Lightningishish
Being inspired by Oggy Bar's Summer Lightning-ish I'm going to brew this evening ... This one is for a woodcarving mate down the road who has his exhibition in Sept .. He always gets some Sussex Best from Harvey's as it's a local fav so he wants a contrasting alternative, summer beer kind of thing ... I'm thinking that not all there will like very bitter beers so i'm keeping ibu's down to 25-30 and the strength to 4.2% ..
23L
Pale Malt 4kg
T/Wheat 110g
East Kent Goldings 4.6%
40g @ 60mins should give me 20 ibus at 25% utilisation
19g @ 15mins another 8 or so
7g @ 0mins for plenty of aroma ...
Portofloc and SO4 ...
OG 1045
I get a consistent 85% efficiency out of my brewhouse so i'm confident with the OG ... the hops are from Paul at Barley Bottom .. hop utilisation is still a bit of a mystery to me so any comments about the above are welcome .. What are people's thoughts on the 60min boil ?
Pics will be added this evening as I'm making use of my new dedicated water supply and brewery pipework ..

Photos as promised ...

New water supply into the garage to save me dragging the hose around ..

Shiny brewery of which I am very proud and constantly tinkering with ..

Water feed comes into pipework bolted to the side of the brewery with feeds to HLT ..

Spare feed with hozelock connector and plate chiller feed with hozelock connector too ..

Bang on 67deg and it didn't budge a bit over 90mins ... thoroughly warmed up for about an hour before ... water went in at 82deg .. strike at 74 topped up to 67 in just over 10 litres ..

Sparge arm performs great on the thermobox

Boil .. what you dont see is the frantic empty and refill when i dropped a bit of rubber tube into the copper .. !

Plate chiller in action ... after sterilising I've been putting it in the freezer for about an hour which seems to help .. collander is making a guest appearance owing to the hop filter coming away during the boil!

not a very good shot of the starter .. so4 from Barley Bottom ..

FV 20hrs in .. not very quick to start but there is some action .. causing a little bit of concern but as long as it's doing something I guess thats ok ..
Hit 1045 as intended ... hop filter came away during the boil but the rest produced a nice filter bed which worked fine .. filter was crap anyway ..
Cheers

And further good news .. have found that the John Lewis splatter cover currently employed in the kitchen fits just about perfectly into my boiler which will now be used as my hop filter .. of course Mrs Danny rolled her eyes a little and wondered why i was getting so excited .. they have no concept of this at all ..
Hey Dan,
I recently got some yeast from Harvey's. Am well pleased with the brews, being a local you could try the same. I used S-04 for ages, and it is a good yeast no doubt, but liquid yeasts offer greater variety and I love Harvey's peppery-ness. Collected some from Hogs Back yesterday as I was working over that way. Not sure I like their beer particularly (least not in bottles), drinking TEA now and it's pretty forgettable.
Still great thread and let us know how it turns out, I did a SL clone and a baby SL recently with S-04 and Notts. Found them both a bit one dimensional. Pale and bitter. Good luck with yours
