Flat Beer

Post by Iainb » Thu Jul 17, 2008 11:03 pm

I tried some of my Coopers Draught from my beer sphere last night.

It was a nice clear pint and had a good head on it.

The only trouble was the pint was flat.

I had a lot of trouble in the early days with a leaking tap which I am now over and the barrel will now hold a good pressure.

Any ideas on how to fget some fizz back into my beer??

Am I right in saying that the Co2 is only to get the beer out of the sphere and does not add fizz?

Cheers

f youve the patience (i never have)the co2 will carb the beer up i think , just inject it a little roll the barrel back and forth on its side then repeat, then leave it a few days before pulling any more through

If you drop the temp of your beer, any c02 present will be absorbed into the beer. Once warm it comes back out of suspension. So, chill it and force carb it to add fizz. Not too much though, it is an ale after all  This may take a few days to affect the beer.

I'm suffering much the same fate..... I've opened the first 2L bottle of Lager tonight ..... after a big fanfare..... pfffft. Virtually no fizz at all. I decanted the 2L in a jug to stop the swill. If I pour it with some gusto I get a head for a minute or so then it settles to a flatish beer.
I don't think I shook this bottle after I added the primer, others I did, in the name of science obviously...... the beer is nice enough, just would be a bit better a tad fizzier.

Did you prime the beer with sugar when you put it in the keg?

If so, and the barrel isn't leaking, it's surprising if the beer is still flat. What level of carbonation were you expecting?

I used 80 grams of brewers sugar disolved in boiling water to prime the beer.

I suspect I lost most of this fizz when I had to fix the leaking tap.

I will be more than happy with a light carbonation of the beer but at the moment the beer is totaly flat.

I barely have to open the tap and the beer comes out at a great speed creating a good head but flat beer :(

Is there such a thing as to much pressure in a barrel?
