First brewday tomorrow
Started at about 10.30
Much arsing about weighing the grain: the display for the scales being too close to the weighing bit so that when you placed a large contianer on to measure the grain into you could not see the reading! Started measuring it KG by KG. The wife phoned and I forgit where I'd got to. Blowit. Started again. The dog next door barked so loud I forgot again. ARGH!
finally got the grain measured and the water to the right tem and mixed it all up a treat in the MT. Temp 66.1 Having a cup of tea!
Waiting for temp.

The pale malt

My whizzy new thermometer

The mash sitting at 66.1. Following DaaB's advice I put another camping mat around it, as it is windy today

...and a bit further...
Suddenly realised i needed a three-drop set up!

First runnings...never really went clear of bits!

The hops shortly before I knocked them over. Good thing I bought too many.

The holes in my FB are fine DaaB - had to stop down the run off

Tidly sparge arm - all they had at F'boro HB shop

Boiling like a good'n

My shiny homemade ic ready to go in

OG - Oh dear!
I took that thing others have said to heart about overfilling the boiler and having it boil over and kill the thermostat too much and underfilled the boiler. OG was 1.066. I think I'll be adding some water to the FV!
water <gasp>
Hmm!... Added three litres of Adam's ale to my ale.
SG 1.058 still high, was aiming for 1.053! oh well...first time.
Hairy moments:
1). All that weighing out fiasco probably lost me a bit pf flour...
2). Put the sparing arm in and the water shot out of the ENDS of the arm. Bungs missing or blown into mash tun! Cork from Highland Park whisky cut off and fashioned into bungs in double-quick time!
3). When transferring from Boiler to FV, rotting holly leaf fell into the FV. Dropped stirrer into FV in panic. Fished bout out without any harm I think.
5.15 Yeast slurry in, FV in shed with little jacket on (to even out temperature variations), all washed up.
Kind of worried I don't have anywhere at 12oC...

Toast:
Those hairy moments are what makes brewing so interesting!
Martialant had His dog drinking His last week!
We've all had Our moments though. I've forgotten the number of times i've left the tap open on the FV when transferring from the boiler and it's hissed out all over the floor while I've been attending to other things. Two gallons of stout over the kitchen floor makes a bleeding mess.
Look forward to hearing how it turns out!
/edit
Don't worry about keeping the finished beer at 12C just put it in the coolest place You can it'll be fine.

it's alive
Just had [another] sneaky peek: lovely yeast crown with bubbles cracking the brown top. It's all go in there!
BTW: I now understand why I had a thick head this morning. The A over T at the Hogs Back was marked 6.6% on the board soat the till, I bought 5.5 pints. Drunk 4 last night. Today I looked at the poly-bottle: it's 9% no wonder it was quite chewy!

SG
1.058 down to 1.017.
Drank the very cloudy measuring tubeful and it was very nice! Not a session beer by any means: toffee-sweetish and reasonably strong alcohol taste, with a long, fresh bitter after taste! Can't wait till it's ready. Hope a glassful of yeast is not going to play havoc with my insides!
