Riggwelter

Post by nofe4r » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:03 am

Hi all.

I am looking into brewing a Riggwelter by Black Sheep Brewery as posted here viewtopic.php?p=2472#2472

There seems to be an awful lot of chocolate malt in the recipe. I have had a search on the forum and there is a few posts saying the same but none of them say if they altered it in any way (or didn't).

I would be grateful if anyone who has tried this recipe (altered or not) for some tips.

Thanks.

I had a go a few weeks ago, Ive just bought a bottle so I can have a taste test, ill let you know what I think.
I would cut down the amount of chololate malt the colour was a little dark.

Thanks Daab. I will have a play around with Beersmith and see I can come up with something.

Keeps the tips coming though.

OK. I have had a fiddle with Beersmith. How about this:

4.28 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter 70.05 %
0.55 kg Wheat, Torrified 9.00 %
0.37 kg Crystal Malt 6.06 %
0.30 kg Chocolate Malt Grain 4.91 %
0.001 kg Roasted Barley Grain 0.005 %
0.61 kg Brewing Sugar (Glucose) 9.98 %

+ the hops.

(I know it adds up to 100.005%, but Beersmith won't recognise 1 gram)

Then this will be my next brew.

I will try and take photos of this one and post them. Thanks for the help.

Was just about to get going and have just realised I have ordered Wheat Malt instead of Torrified Wheat.

Can I just substitute one for the other?

Yeah, you should be ok with that as it only makes up 9% of the recipe. The main difference between wheat malt & torrified wheat is that the torrified wheat is not malted, it is heated up & "popped" just like popcorn.

Thanks.

I found an old post that said basically the same.

Thanks again.

I have tasted a bottle of it in its young state and it tastes blooming marvellous. My adjusted recipe tastes a lot better than the original one IMO. I am going to give it couple of months (maybe until xmas). If I am tempted to sample another then I will take a piccy and post it.

Highly recommended.
