Tribute - 03/08/08
I had this brew planned for Sunday... unfortunately no more a fitting time for a Tribute brew than now; a very good friend of mine's wife passed away this week at the young age of 27. May our thoughts be with him and his family.

Thanks for the kind words.
Unfortunately the Hop & Grape delivery didn't arrive in time :/ Stupid council are digging up our road to resurface it so I suspect the courier saw the 'Road Closed' signs and couldn't be arsed to walk.
I'll be brewing something else - but not quite sure what yet.
Will return to this thread maybe next weekend when the hops/grain should have arrived by. I am itching to brew this beer.

Ok it's a few weeks later than I first planned, but I think I'm brewing this later.
I nipped home at lunch to get the mash liquor treated, set on a timer to come on half an hour before I get home and weighed out the grist. Kitchen is now a bombshell from my half hour whirlwind lunchbreak. Equipment, chemicals & ingredients everywhere
Recipe as per the original post but I'm using Williamette instead of the flame-out Styrians so my hop schedule will be:
10 IBU Fuggles 60min
12 IBU Williamette 60min
4 IBU Fuggles 15min
4 IBU Williamette 15min
40g Williamette at 80 degrees.
I'm interested to see what the Munich turns out like as I've not used it before.

Mash is on - came home to find the HLT boiling
I should time/calculate how long it should take to come up to strike temp as opposed to guessing in future!
Messy kitchen - good job SWMBO's at work

HLT with new sight glass fitted:

Mash tun with hozelock style connector on the back of the tap to make a better connection with the manifold via pvc tubing:

Doughed in:

Mash temp 65 (parallax error on the photo, honest!):

Argh - problems...
1. Had to go out so the mash ended up as 2 hours - ok not a problem really.
2. Forgot the hop strainer
3. Thought I had a fuse blow on the extension cable I'm using to run the two elements in the boiler... After changing the fuse, still nothing... Turned out to be the thermal cutout on the extension lead
So about two hours behind schedule after all that. Bum.

Christ what a brewday this turned out to be... more problems post-boil:
1. My newly adapted twin IC decided to leak water into the wort
- must recheck those T-fittings. Had to pull it out in the end so I'm leaving the wort to cool the remaining 5-10 degrees overnight.
2. Lost the thermometer - spent half an hour in the dark looking for it (I was boiling outside).... I gave up hope and then it appeared in the boiler as I was draining it to the FV
.
3. Clean up is happening tomorrow morning due to all the delays.
My WLP002 starter is bubbling away nicely. If I wake up for a pee in the night then I'll pitch the yeast - otherwise it'll be tomorrow morning.
Never had a brewday with quite so many problems
It'll be a miracle if this brew doesn't end up infected.
