First brew advice please

Post by nepeta » Tue Aug 05, 2008 5:53 pm

Hi

Brewing a Coopers IPA with yeast supplied. Started it on friday afternoon.

I assume it must have foamed up because about an inch above the brew level it has a line of brown sludge.

Stuck my hydrometer in last night and it was around 20. There was no faom on it just clumps of what I assume is yeast. No film on it or anything. I gave it a gentle stir.

I was worried it was too cold as per Coopers instructions (21-27 degrees ferm temp) so I wrapped a blanket round it.

Still nothing appears different today.

Should I do anything or just leave it?

Cheers for any advice

Actually, the recommended fermentation temperature is very high. 27C would usually spoil a brew.

It sounds as though everything is fine; the rate of fermentation slows exponentially so the last few degrees of gravity take a while. I would leave it at least a week (i.e. till Friday), checking the gravity each day if you can be bothered. Once you get a stable reading anywhere around or under 10 for 2 days it will be done.

Cheers.

I've left it tonight but I'll check it again tomorrow.

Checked again today and it's 1010.

I'll leave it tonight and check again tomorrow and may then keg it.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest the other night.
