Nice one Chris. Did you add any more DME or treacle as Daab mentioned or did you keep to the recipe?

Made a trip to Leyland home brew again as i am almost in need of another keg so I bought two of their cheep ones with s30 caps.

Also found they had 3 tins of John Bull Irish Stout but they are the last ones seeing as John Bull has gone out of business also had some Styrian Goldings which are also hard to get hold of due to a bad crop

So shopping list was
2 Kegs
2x John Bull Irish Stout Cans
500g Dark Spray Malt
1kg Glucose
1x bag of Styrian Goldings
2x Sachets of S04
1x finnings 2 part ( recomended by the shop )
1x barrel brush

Will get bottles in a month to bottle this after its had a month in the barrel which as I believe is a rather nice pint.

still not got round to the photos, but next time i get a pint ill take a snap and post it.

as for which kit, porters etc, my decision process was as simple as 'get two stout kits the same', so john bull kits or whatever they had basically. It was a bit of an experimental brew and everything was done with a chuck it in and see mentality (within reason) as you seem to have got 2 jb kits then you cant go far wrong.

i wish i'd bottled some of this as i would have liked to have kept some for longer, and the barrell is a bugger to chill on hot days.

hope you have a good brew, and it turns out as good as mine is.

I was going to get 2 london porters but they did not have any in but after what you had said about the pint chris I thaught why not just get the same ones seeing as they were their.

Im going to try something different in the future though it will have to be a dark / porter type with the extra hops. But for this time im looking for a good strong christmas Ale which his should turn out to be.

My thanks for the information much appreciated sorry for copying your brew though but I just had to try it :D

just as an afterthought, i used styrian goldings as thats all i had, i did try and get some fuggles as i thought they would go better with the stout. The brew tastes fine with styrians mind so im quite pleased.

I managed to get a pack of styrins but as I said they are now hard to get hold of due to a bad crop so im going to guard these like they are gold dust , I think they were the last in he shop :?

Oh how long did you boil them for chris ?

Dont believe everything the odd bloke at Leyland homebrew says. I mentioned saaz hops & he then told me that the few packs he had left on the shelf were the last he'd have until next year as they were scarce. I didnt buy them & guess what?......... 2 weeks later the shelf was cram packed full of the stuff.

IMO he's a blagger. He does know his shit, i'll give him that. But yeah, he's a blagger.

i normally split the batch, then add half to a boil for 10 mins, then turn off the gas and add the second half.

I find this is enough to freshen up the hop aroma and taste and although im not sure it makes a difference doing it in 2 halfs, i dont want to change it as 'if it aint broke/dont fix it' if you see what i mean.

i never weigh hops (dont have scales that will measure that fine), a good handfull for 10, then a 2nd for the steep.
