Is 4 Weeks too long?

Post by Norik » Mon Aug 18, 2008 3:40 pm

I work away from home in the oil industry, I was just wanting to check that if I set a brew before I go away that it would happily work away for the 28+ days no worries?

I must drink the Beer.
Beer is the mind-killer.
Beer is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my Beer.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the Beer has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

Its getting to the outside of the generally normal limit, but i'd say take a chance on it.

Long as it's somewhere cool i'd guess it'll be ok.

Nice Dune reference. ;)

Ditto.

Unless it's an Eon reference of course.

It would be best if you could complete the primary fermentation before you leave it. Four weeks in the secondary, or in the keg is no problem at all, but sitting on a yeast bed in the primary for four weeks may impart and over yeasty flavour.

Personally I think 4 weeks is to long on the yeast bed,
It would have been better to have it conditioning for the 4 weeks you are away, then it will be ready to drink when you get back

in common with the other advice, rather than using the kit yeast spend the extra on a packet of S04 if making ale. If you follow Jim's advice on making a yeast starter and keep the FV at the right temp you should get the primary fermentation done in a week. Get that racked off into a keg and conditioning while you're away and you should have lovely beer to come home to.

Fair enough, I'll set it when I come home, it'll likely have 2 and a half to 3 weeks.

My plan this time is~
a) Fit, as recommended elsewhere on the forum, a tap to the side of my fermentation bin, so i don't need to bother siphoning.
b) Then make my Coopers lager kit, with 1kg of Muntons Extra Light Spraymalt.
c) Fit the Fish tank heater (that's what it looks like to me) set at around 18-20C.
c) Put away, and leave for a couple weeks.
d) Bottle, and leave for 4 weeks.
E) Put in fridge for a week.

The Fermentation bucket should get a very steady temperature as I acquired some 3/4" thick 'Arma-Flex' Insulation to wrap it in.

Damn, I've got to go and work again, don't they know I was planning on skiving my last hour. /bah.
