Is 1036 SG ok?

Post by Prozac » Tue Aug 19, 2008 9:31 pm

I've kicked off a two tin Muntons Gold Continental Pilsner kit a couple of days ago..... the SG was, I believe, 1036....... this sounds horribly low.
Unless it drops to a good low reading, around 1003, isn't going to very weak?
1036 -1003 =33
33/7.36= 4.48%

Certainly satisfactory.

Lets hope for a good drop......

I hope so cos my stout was only 1037 and I'm using a fairly low attenuation yeast :s

Another slight concern is that my Youngs Lager, my first brewing, turned out to be flat as a witches tit :? I'm hoping for more life in this Pilsner....
I've fitted a tap and a bottling stick to my 2ndry FV so will decant from the primary into the 2ndry add the glucose and then bottle from the 2ndry.

If your brew was flat, it's probably because there wasn't enough yeast in there to do the job. Presuming you added priming sugar, of course...

1036 is a bit low for pilsner. FG for a pils should be around 1008 to what 1012?... I wouldn't expect the muntons yeast to attenuate to 1003.

Did you check the instructions on where to make the kit up to? Some of them are only 20l kits instead of the full 5 gallons.

It says it makes 40 UK pints..... and "add 29 pints of cold water to bring the volume up to 5 uk gallons" in the destructions......

It's frothed well and smells good at only 3 days in.....

Would leaving it in the FV for longer make the final yeast content lower? The instructions say "fermentation is complete when bubbles cease to rise (usually 7-8 days) or when gravity is constant below 1014"

It was a two can kit and says no sugar required, so obviously I've not added any.

Maybe best to just 'see what happens' :)

Around 1012 will be about the best you can hope for for a 3Kg extract kit, unless the kit includes a sachet of Dry Beer Enzyme.

It should still taste great though. 8)

Does it say on the kit instructions what the OG should be? If it's supposed to be significantly higher than 1.036 then maybe the extract from the tins wasn't fully dissolved. It might be too late now, but if that was the case you would be able to dredge up some sticky extract from the bottom of the fv with a long spoon or paddle.

I stirred it well and checked the bottom for sludge before pitching the yeast.

I have no idea what the SG should be unfortunately .... no worries. I'm sure it'll turn out ok.
