Cheers for the recipe Garth Early start today, I'll be mashing out at 8.30am.

For 23L

4010g Maris Otter
310g Torrified Wheat
250g Crystal Malt
41g Fuggles (60 mins)
35g Progress (60 mins)
15g Aurora (10 mins)
85g Aurora (after switch off, once 80C has been reached)

60 min mash at 67C

This isnt the original recipe. I've not got enough Fuggles for the hop schedule so using a bit of Progress instead. The original recipe was 55g Fuggles.

Have a good one. I did a version of this a couple of weeks ago. Didn't post in the brewday thread as my camera was on the blink, so no pics.

I overshot the gravity but didn't bother to top up. Ended up at 4.3% - in the fridge now being carbonated. Early samples from the FV were fantastic. Must admit, didn't have crystal in my recipe though. When I last had a pint it was as pale as an albino's arse. (well, nearly).

..and it does make a cracking beer. I've got myself some more Aurora for another batch, luurvelly.

Must admit, mine has come out very pale so you might be right. I've only ever had it on draught and the pub in question doesn't have it on anymore, otherwise I'd go back and double-check

well, who cares what it looks like as long as it tastes good, those Aurora are the dog's bits

you get it round here a fair bit as a lot of tied houses are restricted to what they can order, luckily Deuchars is one of them, as is Bombarbier. I asked my local to get some Hobgoblin in, she nearly had a heart attack when I told her it was about 5% on cask, far too strong she said, wouldn't sell enough, folk were 'scared' of anything more than 3.8 - 4%, the soft twats....

Good luck with it, i've authored a couple of Deuchars 'clones' and posted 'em up here, I think they've amalgamated with the others on here and become a collective forum Deuchars recipe

I used malted wheat just for head retention although It's probably not in the original. Pale ale malt on its own creates a little to light a beer so the crystal is to give it a bit more of a golden hue, but it's best to use your own descretion. Caledonian use direct fired coppers which will lead to significant wort darkening in the kettle - I've heard they even use some sugar to lighten it, without using any crystal.

All went well. Wish I'd knocked back on the Crystal as its left me short for a brew planned next Saturday. Doubt I can get to LHBS and have already made up the WLP-002 starter

The large amount of hops made the run-off from the boiler to the FV quite a headache. It was running to a bare trickle even to start with. I had to use a plastic paddle to swirl it around a bit. No doubt I'll have a bit of break material carried over to the FV but at least it ran. The flow sorted itself out about half way through.

I ended up with about 21L. As I'd hit the target OG then I didnt bother to dilute with more liquor.

always keep a big supply of crystal it lasts longer than pale as it has no enzymes to worry about.

Glad your brew went well, will have to try Deuchars some day have so many beers on my wish list probably be around 2012 before I get around to it.

I took a reading yesterday and its down to 1010. Still very cloudy though. Its only been in the FV since Monday so I'm hoping the yeast will clean it up a bit. I don't bottle until 12 days in the FV regardless of it reaching TG after 5 days. I'm just hoping the cloudiness isn't due to alot of break material coming through the hop strainer.

I'm using US-05 which tends to throw up an impressive krausen so I guess theres still alot of yeast in suspension. It tasted good from the test tube, there's definitelty that 'grapefruit' aftertaste from the late Aurura hops. The colours looking spot on as well.
