taking barrel on journey

Post by nepeta » Tue Aug 26, 2008 5:42 pm

Hi

I've got a Great Eastern which is clearing nicely, and a Coopers IPA which is slightly hazy but has a great head in standard barrels.

I'm taking them camping with me.

Any recommendations or advice for helpling them settle once there?

Someone suggested adding finings when I get there but won't I lose pressure then?

Cheers!

Unless it's a long trip, I don't fancy your chances of have clear beer before it's time to come home. If I had to transport a barrel of beer in the car, I'd want to leave it at least a week to settle afterwards.

The best way to transport beer is to let it clear completely and rack it into a corny keg and artificially carbonate it.

Other's may have more hopeful opinions, though!

What about transferring some into bottles before we go?

that would kind of work but there might not be much carboation left, I have transferred form keg to bottle before and chilling it all first is the key and a little extra co2 first to aid absorbtion

If this is their first camping trip they may well be quite excited.
All I can say is make sure they're tucked up in bed for an early night and a favourite bed time story will help no end.

Have a good trip!

Plastic bag in a box

Post by e-brewer » Tue Aug 26, 2008 9:47 pm

Hi All I recall some people on here talking about using a collapsing plastic bag in a box would this not be suitable for transportation assuming it was clear beer that had been put into it also could this box not be put in a picnic thermos box with some ice packs.?

cheers

Half my beer is in KK's and the rest is in bottles for when I go camping. For me it's as much a weight problem as anything (caravan and car loading). Home brew travels better in bottles anyway.

On the planning stage for another trip to the IOM next year, going in me Land Rover and the buddy sugested I put a tap on the dash, for him. we are bringing a few 50L kegs anyway and I do like a challenge, I could convert an AC system for cooling.
I would love to see the look on the face of the law if we got stopped.
last year some lads went on the bikes, we took all the gear, it was pissing rain so to wind them up, we overtook them, with our shirts off to show how warm we were (I made a few modifications to the landy) they were quite impressed judging by the waves and other signs the were giving us. so the same senario supping a nice pint could prove just the ticket

Just for info..

The IPA was fine after 2 days, the Great Eastern was fine after 4.

As we were down in Cornwall for almost 2 weeks it was well worth taking. Esp as it rained...a lot!

I'm sure the others campers were rather envious of our purpose built beer tent.

If you had a spare plastic keg with s30 you could rack the rack the clear beer into it by attaching a short length of syphon hose to the tap of the full one and emptying in some clear beer to the empty one. Then you'd Gas it up, release the pressure (hopefully purging the O2 then re gas and take it away with you) If you are having to buy new in order to do this though I'd get a smaller corny which is how I have transported HB for camping trips before now.

Just an idea
