Stout - 2nd all grain - pics

This was my second attempt at an all grain brew. My first is currently in a secondary so thought I would crack on with this. Everything went as it was meant to, I do think my efficiency was rather poor on this and ill work out what it was later.

Ingredients:

3Kg Maris Otter
500g Crystal Malt
500g Chocolate Malt
500g Flaked Barley
500g Torrefied Wheat
60g Fuggles Hops 4.00% (90min)
30g East Kent Goldings 4.60% (15min)
1 Protafloc tablet
Safale-04 Yeast

Thought I would just straight into the boil:

Spent grains, not as dark as I would have thought for a stout:

My genius way of getting round lots of steam, windows open and a fan:

Cooler in and ready to go, just before last hops to be added:

Running off to the 10gal FV:

To get the wort nice and aerated I transfer to another FV 30lt capacity:

Trub after the IC took care of business - under 7 mins again:

I ended up with 23lt @ 1042 which was way off my 1060 target which from what I can work out gives me a 68% efficiency (I’m not sure what the extract for 1kg in 1lt is for chocolate malt and torrified wheat so I just used 300).

I think what lowered my efficiency was not sparging properly. I decided to try fly sparging and I think I should have stuck to batch for a few more attempts just to get the technique correct. I’ve also leant that Doughing in is a two man job.

I noticed you use copper push-fit T-connectors to make your twin IC... I've done the same but I have a problem with my IC leaking into the wort whilst chilling - the push-fit connectors just don't seem up to the job on my IC.

I guess you've not had any similar problems?

Btw, good pics, looks like a good brew day you've had :)

I didn't realise they were push fit when I bought them :) I bought an extra elbow to test with - on one end I used the push fit and on the other I used 'just for copper'. The just for copper side was water tight but the push to fit side had lots of leaks. I also tested the whole thing plenty of times before using it (blowing through while under water to see air bubbles and using a higher pressure than what I would normally use of water to see any leaks.
