Has anyone tried...

I saw a John Bull London Porter kit at my local home brew shop which I was interested in. However, before purchase I thought I'd see if anyone has any experience of this kit, and if so, any suggestions of ways in can be 'improved'. Over to you!

I am currently brewing 2 stout cans with extra hops and malt extract for a christmas stout at the moment, Seems to be quite happy seeing as it started at 1076 and is now at 1012 still bubbeling smells good and the small samples I lift for testing are good so I would say give it a go you cant really go wrong .... Oh I am using safale s04 for the yeast these days as the stuff that comes with the kit may be old and on its last leggs.

Never tried that one but have you ever thought of using Honey instead of Sugar?

I did this as my first kit every a few months ago because it was a single can and therefore quite easy. I brewed as per instructions with no additions as didnt know any better. It was fantastic it was rather flat but I expect that was my mistake not rinsing the barrell enough or something like that. At the time someone on here suggested priming with black treacle but I didnt have any so it got common tate and lyle.

It took about 10 days to ferment out and stopped at 1014 I think and started 1044 ish was pitch black and difficult to see when it cleared. First month after conditioning tasted good, second even better and then ran out.

I perhaps wasnt generous with the water and made it up a couple of pints short of the 40 pint mark.

Go for it its a great drink

Many thanks for the replies gents (looks like I was too hasty!). I've always liked porter so I'll give it a go. Cheers! :)
