4/9/2008 - super stunner

Sort of styrian stunner but with aurora and some leftover Kolsch ingredients...

super stunner (50Litres) ~37IBU & ~1.050

Ingredients:
10 kgs Pale Ale Malt (MASH)
0.5 kgs Wheat Malt (MASH)
0.5 kgs Munich Light Malt (MASH)

70 g Aurora 5.8% BOIL 60 minutes
50 g Boadicea 7% BOIL 60 minutes

100 g Aurora 5.8% BOIL 15 minutes
1 whirlfloc

30 g Aurora 5.8% FINISHING 0 minutes
30 g bramling x ~5% FINISHING 0 minutes (homegrown)

EDIT: hops open to suggestions!

WLP029 (kolsch yeast - starter chugging away)
Boil Time: 60 minutes

Procedure:
Mash Efficiency - don't know yet ~75-80%?
Add 36 liters of water at 73C to heat mash to 67 C
recirc for 60 mins, then drain off 25L to boiler
Sparge with 25 liters of water to yield 50L in boiler
Water Absorbed by Grain: 11L
Water Evaporated during boil: 5L
liquor back to 50L

This will be using my new brewery for the second time, I didn't post the 8gallons of kolsch i brewed 9 days ago as i just wanted to concentrate on what i was doing.

You'll notice the mash is quite wet - i'm using my old IC as the HE in the HLT for a HERMS. worked well last time as soon as i realised the temp on the HLT needed to simply match the mash temp.

I've got a 33L HLT, and my SS 50L keg mash tun is only insulated with an old sleeping bag draped on top. I overheat 30L strike water and let it cool to 73C with the other 6L of liquor in the mash tun helping to do this, whilst the HLT goes full pelt to heat another 25L liquor for using with the HERMS and for my second batch sparge.

Other interesting bits of kit are the false bottom made out of a floor lamp and the Aleman hop-stopper. connections are all with posh disconnects, bright red caravan hot water hose and my trusty RG550 with a tidy little recirc loop. cooking with gas too (nervous about that burner, probably a healthy state of mind!)

regarding the unknown efficiency, you might wonder at this as it is my second brew on this kit, but I can't fathom how to calculate it as it went a bit weird.

The facts were... 8Kg lager malt, 0.5 kg wheat malt, 0.5 kg munich. collected 27L at 1.065 (BG) and liquor-backed post-boil to achieve 40L...
27L is not an efficient amount of sparge liquor, but had I sparged with 44L, what would I have got???
:-k

No suggestions as such but I'll be interested in this as just five minutes ago I had some Boudiccea and Aurora delivered so I'm looking for ideas. The boudicea is supposedly Challenger like and Aurora like Styr Golds of course Have you used these before and if so how do they measure up? The hop schedule looks great by the way

Looks great, should be interesting to see what you think of your homegrown bramblings
