You're spending too much on your ingredients then!

Costs

Hi All One other factor that helps the married men amongst us is that the wife doesnt have a chance to complain about your beer money spent doon the pub and she gets more opportunity to moan at you cause you are drinking at home but seriously you have cracked it/solved the rubiks cube when you find a brew the other half likes. As far as the euipment costs go think cleverly and buy kit with the future in mind .I would if i was starting now read the sage like advice on this forum and GO SHINY at least go the corny route for storage/dispense.

Since my first brew has failed to condition in a cheap (and evidently not airtight) placcy keg I'm up for the Cornie idea. So...what exactly is a Cornie and why is it so great? At the moment I'm running my flat cloudy beer into PET bottles and re-priming.

Oh the shiny kegs! :) They were the dearest part of my AG kit but undoubtedly the best investment of all. Sourcing the pub gas was the biggest problem but then there's always Widget World and Hambleton Bard if you can't get that. There's keg's going for £29 (including delivery) on Ebay at the moment and had they not been the pinlock variety I'd have had a couple. I'm set up for the ball-lock version so it would be a bit of a pain having to switch the disconnect on the CO2.

Note that if you do go down this road and source some pub gas you'll also need a pressure regulator.

Never had any problems with my Kegs, get a decent one like a King keg and use vasaline around the thread and you shouldn't have any problems.

Prozac

I initially bought a £20 Brew Buddy kit.... this included the kit itself.
I used PET pop bottles (1ltr Tonic Water/ Bitter Lemon bottles are my preferred size) so these were free....

Bag of sugar. £2 I guess....

So the first kit cost me £22 for 40 pints = 55p per pint
2nd would cost £10 for the kit and £2 for the sugar = 30p

This would knock the average down to 42.5p
3rd the same, and you're down to 38p.
Can't really see how you'd get it much cheaper the 30p a pint.

But compared to £2 per pint in the pubs..... you're quids in from the start.

You can get even cheaper going all grain:

Let's say 4Kg MO, 250g Crystal & 80g Fuggles, S-04 yeast.....

Prices for grain & hops from Hog's Back Brewery shop, balance from Barley Bottom.

Session Bitter - 40 pints
Maris Otter - £2.95 per 3kg, so call it £4 for the 4 kilos
Crystal Malt - can't remember....let's say £1.50 per kilo, so 40p for 250g
Hops - £2.95 per 250g, so approx £1.00 for 80g
S-04 £0.90 per packet
Protafloc tablet £0.15
Electricity £1.00
Total: £7.55 or 19 pence per pint!

I think that's about as low as you'll get it unless you really start buying in bulk!

20p per pint for fresh, quality beer. I think that's outstanding!
