Got my kit today and in the lid of the bing theres a hole with rubber around the out side

Most people (myself included) don't bother with an airlock for fermenting beer - there's enough gas given off to protect the brew (and the yeast head protects it too). If fermentation gets really vigourous you can crack open a corner of the lid to relieve the pressure.youngbrewer wrote:do i need one??

Put a 2 pence coin over it as that will be heavy enough to stop creapy crawlies getting in they could burrow under a cloth and still get in. Also the 2 pence coin will allow gas to escape so you can put the lid on tight as you need to allow the CO2 that is produced to escape.youngbrewer wrote: I was thinking about that
