Welcome to the forum and happy brewing, As for the hole in the lid with the rubber bung it is for an air lock.

Most people (myself included) don't bother with an airlock for fermenting beer - there's enough gas given off to protect the brew (and the yeast head protects it too). If fermentation gets really vigourous you can crack open a corner of the lid to relieve the pressure.

Cover that hole though chap you dont want anything droping through it that could contaminate your beer.

Put a 2 pence coin over it as that will be heavy enough to stop creapy crawlies getting in they could burrow under a cloth and still get in. Also the 2 pence coin will allow gas to escape so you can put the lid on tight as you need to allow the CO2 that is produced to escape.

I wonder what all this home brewing and CO2 is doing to the enviroment  seeing as the world seems to be on a carbon production cutdown !

 Bloody well spotted, that man! 'Mind you; As I sit in my CO2 production plant here, I'm surrounded by cattle, belching and farting their methane. I even have a Rottweiler bitch here who, I'm sure, could belch for Eire in the next Olympics! Never quite known a Dog like it. God knows what she produces.
