No Priming Sugar???

Post by the-earl » Tue Sep 16, 2008 4:15 pm

I brewing the "Brewmaker - Northumberland Brown Ale".
The instructions on tin are as follows : -

Simmer Contents of tin with a little water for 5 minutes
Transfer to a pre-sterilised fermenter adding 1Kg brewing sugar. Top up to 40 pints with water.
Add contents of yeast sachet.
Cover and leave in a warm place for about 5 days.
Siphon beer into pre-sterilised bottles or barrels, leave for 2 days then move into a cool area ready to drink.

Now this is the first Ale I have made. I usually make a lager. Do I not need to add any sugar for priming when bottling?

I would or it'll be as flat as a flat pat of shit. About 80g of sugar dissolved in 150ml of water boiled in the micro then allowed to cool, that should do the trick. add a bit more if you fancy a bit more fizz.

They are relying on residual sugars to condition the brew. 5 days probably wont fully ferment the brew, therefore you 'should' have some sugars left/ There are no guarantees though ... However after the two days before storing somewhere cool, you'll probably need a minimum of three weeks before it's conditioned. If it was lager I would suggest a longer ferment and then add the priming sugars too.

I agree with MB. Let it ferment out completely, then prime before bottling.

Cheers for the advice guys. I will add about 80g of Sugar to prime after fermentation. Then leave for about 2-3 weeks conditioning.

Great forum by-the-way Jim.

Good for you!

I think some of the kit manufacturers are worried that the more steps they put in the instructions, theharder the kit looks to do (and therefore worried that they may lose sales). However once the yeast is added and the kit is fermenting in reality (other than the taste) there's little difference between brewing a kit and brewing AG (though a kit often ferments down alot lower). If you decide to go Extract or AG later though the expereince you gain now will stand you in good stead.

Hope you enjoy it

the earl. How did you get on with this. I am about to make the exact kit and came up with the same questions as you. An
addition at what termerpature did you introduce the yeast.

How many days did you leave the bottles in secondary fermentation before moving to a cold place to condition?

Cheers
