18/09/08 - Four Shades of Stout

Post by Garth » Thu Sep 18, 2008 11:25 am

Well, after about 2 months and no brewing, it's time to get back into it, plus it's been donkey's since I posted a brewdays thread.

Lots of changes to the equipment so it'll be a bit strange getting used to the gear. At the moment all the gear is just 'balanced' on things, but I'll be getting a stainless stand welded up once I get the configuration right. Something like BeerBelly's with the tip mash tun and boiler probably. The new pump makes moving water/wort about real easy.

This recipe comes from Aussie Homebrewer, I found it through drsmurto's signature, cheers mate,

It's only slightly altered for my efficiency and slight grain differences, I'll be using Nottingham as in the original.

Doughing in with the big spoon, it looks small but that's actually a 50litre TB, a bit near the brim....maybe time for the 80litre?

Mashing at 66C, spot on

..more to follow

cheers lads, shiney it may be but I'm learning all the difficulties associated with a one-level system today.

the pump I've bought is brilliant, thanks Vossy for the invaluable into, it's really quiet and very quick at filling things up, but it is a non-self primer, so it's fine opening a tap, letting liquid flow into it then set it away pumping, but it didn't like pushing liquid up to the sparge arm, will have to think that one through a bit more.

plus the bloody wasps round here are a pain in the arse, already killed a few and found one dead getting sparged in the mash....

I fished 3 out of the sparge a few weeks ago, there was literally half a dozen wasp corpses in along with the hop trub at the end of the boil

bloody hell, good pic though!

is that your hop filter? looks good, what is it made from?

I bought one of these as I was sick of the amount of insect life coming into the kitchen when we're cooking, it's just perched on top of the cooker hood at the moment but works a treat, you want to hear how long wasps fry for, a good minute some of them, must be full of liquid... :D

Looking good Garth, you will have to let us know what a sparged wasp adds to a brew!

Hope to be back in the brewing saddle in a few weeks time myself.

Heh, no, I use a copper strainer - that's the kitchen sieve
