27/09/08 - Whitbread Bitter

Post by maxashton » Sat Sep 27, 2008 12:58 am

I've been trying to get this brewed for weeks now, but I've got the starter all ready to pitch, the ingredients weighed out, and will start as early as is feasible tomorrow.

Camera is, this time, charged and working, and proper flash has batteries.

This is an experimental brew, I've never used Whitbread before.

Hop strainer in, lautering manifold in, mash tun preheating, grist in a bag ready to go...

Buggered up mash preheat, temperature far too low, only 72 degrees. Raising to 80 and allowing to cool naturally back to 72.

Mashed in 1:00, grain bed at a nice even 65 degrees. Will start sparging at 2:30. Going to have a go at fly sparging, never done it before, but thought it might be a giggle.

Sparge took ages, and my extraction wasn't so good.
But then, it never is. ;)

Boil is starting up, first hop addition as soon as boil is going properly. Thinking my efficiency is going to be pretty terrible!

We shall see how much i get after boil.

Great pics!
Did you make that little trolley yourself or can you buy them?

Got it from Lidl for about 3 quid. It'd be easy to knock one up, though.

Pretty disappointed with this brew overall. Probably mucked up the fly sparge, only got 22 litres of 1042 wort. I know that's not too far off from my target, but considering the grist was 6kg.. heh

Perhaps need to invest in a spinny sparger and some water chemistry.
