Throttle

Post by stevezx7r » Wed Oct 08, 2008 3:06 pm

Just on making todays beer, imaginatively named - Throttle, in keeping with the bike related beers

Here's the recipe, it's simple, like me

3500g Marris Otter (3 ebc)
273g Crystal (60 ebc)
265g Torrified Wheat (3.3 ebc)

30g Target @ 10 AA Boil for 60 mins
30g Aurora Steep for around 20 mins

1 tsp Irish Moss for around 15 mins with IC

1 Vial of White Labs WLP002 Liquid Yeast

So, as you can see a pretty simple recipe for a (hopefully) straw coloured pale ale.

With the low hop rates, coupled with the medium ABV of around the 3.5% mark and the high flocculation of the yeast, It should be ready in just a few weeks

If this works out as planned and tastes good I'll be repeating it along side beers which take a little longer to mature. The idea being I make this simple/quick one which can be quaffed in a couple of weeks without the thought of "I know this will get better but It's not going to get the chance" and make a good/more complicated beer which I can leave alone for a few months.

Anyway, mash on for 60 mins then sparge and boil for another 60.

I was going to take pics/video but i've forgot again

Laters.

Aren't you being a bit vague with the crystal? personally I'd go for 273.35gms

Yeah, thanks for the hops n grains Garth, without you etc etc

Slightly under target @ 1034 so a bit lighter than I wanted...not too late to throw in some demerera I have kicking about though... Also, I forgot that the WLP002 doesn't ferment down as low as s04 so I may sling in a pack of dry beer enzyme toward the end, not sure about that though as I quite fancied something a little sweeter

I have a kit can lurking in the kitchen next to my used boiler. I haven't thrown the spent hops out yet so I may just boil it up in that then sling it in another FV to see what happens. I have some maple syrup in one of the cupboards too....Hmmm :?

Anyway, time for a cuppa and suppa.

Not going to bother adding any extras - this time. It's starting to ferment now anyway so I don't want to ruin it. If it stops lower than 3%abv I'll add some dry beer enzyme although I'm loath to do this as it will change the flavour. I'll maybe throw in some s04 to "clean up" the rest of the sugars but i'm not going to add any more fermentables.

BTW, Garth, I filled the WLP002 vial with fresh wort and the remaining yeast has kicked off again so I may have to use it in a kit can I was going to set away soon. Handy those little vials. :)

Now that's a surprise - I've just taken a gravity reading and it's at 1008 / 1009. So the abv is about where I wanted it in the first place ~ 3.2 - 3.4% abv. It still has the residual sweetness I was hoping for and the hops are starting to come through now. I'll keg this and bottle a few (Garth  ) and it should be drinkable in another week or so.

Sounds like you need to invent a bottling couch attachment for your fv
