I've only tested my boiler with water so far but there was a lot of steam coming from it so I put the lid on, just placed it on top, not snapped shut and the steam was considerably reduced. could this be a solution I wonder....?

Hi,
Regarding the steam.... Do what I do in't shed, no steam at all, beer tastes great and it's nice and warm in the winter.. Nice to get away from the wife too whilst boiling!!
Shut the door, newspaper, smell the hops, relax!!!!

this looks similar to my plan to fit a tumble drier steam pipe to the boiler and have it trailing out the kitchen window

That's clever. What about having a good stir about with the hops though, does it have good off-and-on-ability?

This is what I did on my previous brewery.

I need to work something out similar for my new shiny brewery when it comes online 8) .

Ya brewery looks good billyB.

The lid on mine has got a 8" diameter cut-out with a mixing bowl on top.
It was was a prototype, I was going to source stainless pipe and a metal mixing bowl but thought what the hell, it works O.K.

Absolutely not. You need to boil-off steam to get down to your required SG and quantity aswell as boiling-off unwanted tastes in the brew. If you brew with the lid on you're going to lose hardly any wort, end up with a low gravity beer which probably won't taste so good either.

I called my brewery 'The Steam Room' after my first ever brew day i am glad she was out as the window had been open for 20 mins when i took the photo on this thread it took me ages to wipe the walls down. I think i feel a washing up bowl modification on the way.
