Post by wetdog » Tue Oct 14, 2008 4:53 pm

finally, after weeks of gathering the equipment and info I've finally taken the plunge :D
here are the pics of my first attempt at Abbot Ale. hope the pics work ok...

my mash tun, insulated on all 6 sides with 20mm polystyrene
Image

doughing in to get rid of all the dry spots

first runnings

back it goes
Image

run off the hot sweet wort to the boiler
Image

Goldings and northern hops
Image

A rolling boil and in go the hops
Image

steam management. this worked like magic - no wet walls in the house
Image

15 minutes left so IC in to steralise
Image

plenty of air into the FV
Image

OG 46 so not bad
Image

the trub
Image

cheap at twice the price

the next day and the crust is formed. good old S-04

on the whole an enjoyable experience with no real problems. A long days work though, around 7 hours

That's it, there's no going back now! Now comes the hard part, waiting for the beer to be ready. You must be a lot less messy brewer than me, I always spread newspapers around when I brew to catch the inevitable spillages. :)
