Help needed with water treatment

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Help needed with water treatment

Post by eskimobob » Fri Oct 20, 2006 7:57 pm

I've been meaning to start treating my water for some time but don't know what I am doing.

I'm on North West Water and have found an analysis report.

From what I can make out my water has:
13ppm Calcium (Ca)
3.3ppm Magnesium (Mg)
10.3ppm Sodium (Na)
29.6ppm Sulphate (SO4)
0.7ppm Chlorine (Cl)
???ppm Bicarbonate (HCO3)

I am guessing I don't need the CRS as my Calcium is too low anyway (it's nice soft water).

What would you suggest I do to treat this water (assuming for the sake of it that I want Burton water)?

Thanks DaaB. Does anyone know how I work out what the Total Alkalinity of my water is based on those figures?? :-s

Edit: Garrrgh - I think I've had too much home brew Image
I've nearly finished my Vanilla Stout and can;t seem to get my head around this tonight...

Looking at the Calcium. Sodium and Magnesium levels in your water I'd guess your total alkalinity is pretty low (less than 100 possibly less than 50). You could do almost anything with that water.

I've a graph in HOW TO BREW that explains water in extreme detail. with a full water analysis you can use it to brew any style. I just used the approximate method desribed in the back of the IPA book from CAMRA. Let me know if anyone wants more details and I'll see if I can extract the relevant portions from the books for them

wont be for a few days - off to Norfolk for a few days - ahhhhh Woodfordes....
