Has anyone used pearl barley as an additive to a brew? I've made traditional barley water from it before and it is a pleasant enough taste but I haven't used any in a beer. I wonder what a 15% addition would do?
Cheers. Cheez
Pearl Barley
Re: Pearl Barley
You could use it as an alternative to flaked barley. Whole barley would need to be milled and cooked before mashing.
Re: Pearl Barley
That would be a good experiment and I would be interested in knowing your results as compared to using Flaked Barley, because Flaked Barley is quite hard to source here where I live, and I'm a fan of Guinness ...
I've done kind of a similar thing but in reverse by sourcing Flaked Maize and using it instead of Corn Grits in lagers, eliminating the need to preform a cereal mash, and I am not able to discern any flavour difference.
So I wonder if you might find no appreciable flavour difference between your Pearl Barley and regular Flaked Barley. Of course there are other qualities which Flaked Barley contributes to the beer other than just flavour.
