Hops shelf life

Post by myke2008 » Sun Nov 02, 2008 3:15 pm

Hi,

Moving over to all grain brewing next week and was wondering how long hops can be kept for. They seem to cost quite a lot of money and I have read plenty of times about using them while they are fresh.

Sorry that this has probably been discussed on here no doubt plenty of times but I can't seem to search for hop or hops as it says its ignoring that word?

They will be marked with a best before date, usually a year or more from the date of sale.

To keep them as fresh as possible I always freeze mine on arrival and keep them there until I need them. I've used hops well past their officail bb date that way and they've been fine.

EDIT: The search facility on this forum has an annoying habit of refusing to search for words that are very common in order to avoid bringing back thousands of results. You might be able to search using another word or a phrase...

I have a drawer in the freezer for my hops like many members. It is recommended to squezze all of the air back out of the bag when you return to the freezer as this reduces the risk of oxidisation.
