when batch sparging how do you measure how much water is going into the mash tun from the hlt when filling the mash tun with run off tubing attached to the hlt.

or do you just use a measuring jug when topping up.

Hi Lewis1981

I just did my first all grain at the weekend and batch sparged. I used a 5 litre jug from Leyland home brew (about a £5) worked a treat!, simple and effective and a very useful bit of kit.

I mash on the thin side, using 12.5 litres for 4.5Kg of grain. I then use 22 litres of sparge water, and have marked that level on my boiler. Once the mash is over I jug in 8 litres of the sparge water at 80C and do the first run off. After that has completed I add the remaining water at 80C, give a good stir, and do the second run off. My brewhouse efficiency averages 79% following this method.
