geordie lager question
geordie lager question
I've had a geordie lager kit on the go since last Friday and it seems to be fermenting, however the gravity is only down to 1018 after a week (my Woodfordes Wherry is down to 1014 in the same time and is going into a barrel tomorrow). There seems to be lots of trapped gas below the surface, when I dropped the hydrometer into the barrel to check the gravity loads of little bubbles raised up from the deep. I gave it a stir and lots of bubbles rose from the depths. Is this normal or is something amiss with my brew?
Re: geordie lager question
It'll do it no harm to be left another week - that'll also let the yeast settle a bit more as well.
Fermentation time depends on temperature as well as other factors, so I wouldn't panic over it; just give it time.

Re: geordie lager question
drmick i've got a geordie lager on the go as well. was going to bottle tomorrow but mine still has loads of bubbles on the top and still seems live. haven't got a hydrometer so might leave it till middle of next week.
Re: geordie lager question

A good stash for Christmas! Ten days ferming.
(sorry about the pic, good olde camera phones!)
Re: geordie lager question
I checked mine last night and it was still about 1010. I won't see it again until the weekend - hopefully it will be down to 1005, or whatever it is its going in bottles (hopefully my bottle capper will arrive in time or I might have to buy a few more plastic bottles to put it all in). Smells a bit better than it did at the weekend as well so hopefully it will taste OK.
