Coopers Australian Lager Kit Gone Wild !

Post by DC » Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:32 pm

Hi all, I have just set a 5 gallon kit of Coopers Australain Lager away yesterday that I bought from Wilkinsons a few weeks back. And the brew has gone a bit wild  . I set it away as per the instructions (done loads of kits over the years) and put my heating belt on the FV to keep the brew at the correct temp. And when I got up this morning the brew was going along quite happily (usual foam head). But then when I got home from work ! The brew had managed to lift the lid off the FV and spew foam and wort on to the spare room carpet . So I proceeded to clean up before wor lass found out (the bairn shopped me :x ) I then fitted an airlock to the FV and thought that would be an end too it. Only to discover 30 mins later the lid of the FV was lifted once again and the brew was making another bid for freedom  and it once again had reached the floor from a set of draws I have the FV on. So I thought too myself ya not gonna do it to me a 3rd time  jugged some of the wort from the bucket and just placed the bucket lid on top of the FV and I have not closed it tight as I had previously. I am closely monitoring the FV and brew as I am typing this and the foam head is starting to build once again.

Just wondering if anyone else had experienced anything like this before with a Coopers Australian Lager kit or any other kits? as I have never in 18 years of brewing had a bucket lid lift off and the wort spew out ! Even with a 5 gallon wine kit using Turbo Yeast. :?:

Cheers DC

Could your problem be to the temp of fv ? never had a lager from Coopers go like that but had a stout do this

Alreet Stubru, I was thinking it might have something to do with temp in the FV :!: I had the heating belt on over night to start the fermenting off ! And when I came from work wor lass has had the heating on all day so maybe both of these factors have contributed to the brew going a bit mental  Once I had jugged a bit of the wort from the FV and just placed the lid on top the FV and not closed it tightly it looks like the brew has stabilised and it looks okay for now ! I have placed the FV on a tray from our grill from the oven (deep sided tray) just incase the brew decides to go off on one during the night and make yet a 3rd attempt for freedom

Iam just glad I chose the lager instead of the stout as there would have been a few black patches on the spare room carpet by now

I"m sure some of the other brewers will have some input on this as well , it maybe just the yeast have a good time the same as my stout

You should bung a blow off tube onto the FV. Run it off to a jug or the sink.

I have just bottled a coopers lager. I didn't have any problems with it. It did froth up a bit at the beginning but that is what I have seen in other brews at the start of the fermentation period.

I keep mine under the stairs and the temp is a pretty constant 20 degrees due to the hot water cylinder. I used 500g spraymalt and 500g brew sugar, so would guess yours might be the temp you have it at and or a yeast or sugar combo?

Hi DC
I'm on my 4th batch of Coopers Australian Lager now. The very first one I did went bonkers but not on the scale that yours has done. This was kept under the stairs at around 20 -25C with 1 KG of brewing sugar.
I now use the yeast that is supplied with the kit with 1.25KG of Young's brewing sugar for a bit of extra oomph, pitch the yeast @ 25C and move to my warming cupboard. I’ve upped the cupboard temperature to 25C on this occasion to try and get the SG down for a weekend bottling session.
Usually I try to keep the temperature steady @ 20C which takes approx 6-7 days to get the FG down to 1004.
Maybe you have had some sort of mutant yeast (if there is such a thing) or the temperature was just right that the yeast cells went whey hey hey.
Keep us posted on the finished product.

Hi All, Just thought I would post an update on my crazy Coopers Australian Lager :x After the disasterous start to this brew, the fermentation quickly died down and went quite smoothly [-o< I have just syphoned the lager into my pressure barrell  (i know your not supposed too put lager in barrells) but I aint got no bottles :( I will leave it for a few weeks and see what it comes out like ! Now the next problem is which kit / extract brew too try next :?:

Well my coopers lager kit is in the 2nd week of conditioning. I naughtily tried one pint after a week and was a touch disappointed. It tasted watery and had none of the hops flavour I was expecting after adding Saaz hops.

I am putting this down to needing more conditioning time but can't be sure. Anyone??

Hi all, Just a quick update on how my Coopers Australian Lager is coming on :D Its been in the keg for over a week and a half now and its nearly half gone  (could not wait). The 1st 6 or 7 pints had a good head and plenty fizz :D but now the lager has a good head retention but its not a gassy as the 1st 6 or 7 pints :( it might need a blast from my Co2 bottle to get the fizz going again  ! I am going too get a Coopers Stout kit this weekend after reading rave reviews on the forum about them. I am hoping to get it fermented and ready to fill my pressure barrell as my Coopers Lager runs out ! Will have too slow down on the lager and have a few glasses of wine instead

Cheers
