A deep breath... SPLOSH!

Had a good one? Tell us about it here - and don't forget - we like pictures!

WOOOHOOO...
Here we go then.

A rather long 'entertaining' day yesterday wrangling drills, shiney things and copper pipe. Finally got my HLT sorted (tried a Vossy style bottom take off - basically as trial to see how it went. Thought "b*gg*r this for a game of soldiers" (no disrespect to Vossy's plan, more my trying to do too much in one day...) and took an executive decision to go down the copper pipe mainfold and side take-off for the Mash Tun. Finshed slicing the holes in the manifold the morning.

Have now cleaned the HLT, MT and plastic bin with hot Sod. Carb. solution and rinsed well. No leaks and all seemed OK... [-o<

30l of water went in HLT around half an hour ago along with liquor salts. Next to weigh out grain and make decision on whether to batch sparge or wield the spinny sparger. Might go with batch sparging to keep things simple (?) on this first attempt.

Have some pics and will post when I get a moment (at the end of the entertainment I suspect... :D )

Feels brilliant to finally be underway on my journey to the Dark Side...

Working out strike temperature...

I have 3.77kg of grain @ 17oC
Adding 9.5l water with required mash temp of 66oC.
Andy's calculator says the liquor needs to be at 73.8oC - say 74oC for ease.

As I understand it, the best way is to pre-heat the tun and let the liquor fall to the strike temp and then stir in the grains?

Here's the first load of pics:

HLT (still to have PID control completed)

Inside the HLT - with thanks to Vossy :D

Mashed in. Some fun and games getting the temperature. Seemed OK but then dropped to 63oC very quickly and need 2l of boiling water to get it back to 66-ish. Ho hum... :?

Forgot to check the pH at teh beginning; checked after about 40mins. Not looking to shabby...

Mash been going for about 100mins. Just about to start sparging now. Decide to go for the fly sparge - what the hell, why not. [-o<

Murphy has just entered the building with his lawbook... #-o

My spinny sparge arm wouldn't spin so I had to quickly change to a batch sparge but with any immediately available menas to measure the sparge volumes. So here's to making it up as you go along... So much for careful preparation and a cunning plan.

If you don't get a clear run off in the boiler does it matter that much? After the first 'batch' I currently have eleven litres of murky brown wort with some bits in it? Argghh.

At least the gravity seems quite good - so at least something happened in the mash.

Next load of pics while the wort is cooling:

First run-off into boiler - all rather murky because I was being hampered by a sticky spinny arm:

An emergency batch sparge without any means to easily measure volumes :( and into the boiler:

Erm... I think I've stumbled across a Quatermass episode. Is there supposed to be that much (?)trub(?)...

Nottingham yeast ready to go and santised FV all ready an waiting.
Then its bedtime - I'm absolutely bushed...! :D

Great stuff. Keep it nice and warm - it's damn cold out there =D>

It'll taste fantastic. When's the next one? :=P

You appear to have had a good hot break there! I get something similar, but only since I moved to using Whirfloc. Did you use any copper finings?

I'd also be interested to know what salt levels you finally settled on.

Its on the worktop in the pantry at the moment - the room seems to hold at around 18oC so I hope that should be alright for now. Controlling FV temps is project for the near future when I've sorted my techniques for the 'basics'; I've alreadt got a few bits and pieces squirrelled away out of sight in the loft

I was hoping to have another go next weekend, but in a moment of weakness I agreed to decorate the living room before Christmas. Mission Control went and booked the carpet fitters for the 4th December so I think I'll be painting instead :(

I didn't use any finings; I do have a couple of freebies that Hop&Grape sent when I bought an element from them, but I had completely forgotten about them (until I read your question 5 minutes ago) :D . Had I remembered I would have used one, but perhaps that wouldn't actually have been necessary. My "Big Beer Textbooks" bang on about water treatment and the importance of Ca ions - in the mash, for forming a good break and for clearing the yeast. Granted, they are aimed at students and pros, not amateur muppets like me, but I still set out to at least try and get that side of things right! I must say that I'm quite chuffed with the results. It was a bit disconcerting see to the boiler over half 'full' of gunk, but it seemed to settle out and compact to give a bed 2 inches thick. Not much seemed to come out into the FV either, despite the Hopstopper arrangement come off and wedging itself beenath the element during the boil. :? Needs some work I think.

I sorted out my calcs to allow for the salts being hydrated #-o  , but toned down the ion concs a little bit anyway. I'll post them up tonight with the rest of the brewday pics.

One question (of many, but the others can wait): How long should it take for the Nottingham yeast to kick in? This may be the perenial worry of new AG brewers? This morning (6:30ish) there wasn't much sign of life: just a covering of largeish bubbles on the surface (pitched at around 11pm last night at around 18oC).

Now the slight worry kicks in...
Yeast issue?
Reading qucikly round the forums I think that 18oC may be a bit cold - any thoughts? Also, I ran the wort into the FV through a sieve - a drop of a round 3 feet. If foamed up nicely. I didn't assault it with a paddle in the FV to aerate further (mostly becasue I don't own anything suitable to beat it with). This is all I have ever done with kits.

Hopefully there'll be a yeast monster trying to escape when I get home. Finger crossed [-o<

You often see the range of 18-22 cited but I think you will find things work out fine. My last brew went like a train at 17.5C ambient (but sitting on a cold stone floor). Upon dipping the beer I discovered that it was 2.3C higher than ambient; hence pretty much spot on average.

The last of the brewday pics:

Draining into FV - the hopstopper came off the tap during the boil so everything went very, very slowly...

OG readings - aimed for 1038 but got 1042 (ish). Very happy with the colour.

I came home tonight to find this. I should have had more faith...

NB - Here are the salts I added to the water:

CaSO4 - 0.5 g/l - 15g in 30l
MgSO4 - 0.2g/l - 6g in 30l
CaCl2 - 0.13g/l - 3.9g in30l

By my calculations, overall liquor concentrations were:
Ca - 160mg/l
Mg - 21mg/l
SO4 - 370mg/l
Cl - 68mg/l

Glad to see it's fermenting like a good un,just wait till you get a taste of your first AG mate. =D>

Good work Mr. Badger!

Well done overcoming the problems as they happened - that's what makes brewing so much fun. You deserve a pint or two to celebrate,

Thanks chaps! It was certainly fun for sure. Could have done with several pints during the process; the trouble is I didn't want to during the day for fear of not being completely on the ball. Unfortunately by the time I'd finished all I was good for was sleeping. Hmm...

Can't wait to taste it. FIngers crossed my cleaning and bug killing was up to scratch.

This whole thing seems to throw up more questions every step you take. Roll on the next one to see if I can answer some of them.
