Single Hop beers

Post by aceuass » Tue Nov 25, 2008 4:05 am

I am going to try some single hop beers and was trying to come up with a basic grain bill/hop schedule

80% Ale malt
15% Munich
5% Wheat

@ 60
@ 15
@ flameout (steep for ?)
What should I keep the IBU`s at, keep to style, what would give me the best results.
Yeast-
American hops-US-05
English hops-US-04
German hops-K-97
All other hops-?

Any suggestions/ideas
Cheers
Paul

looks like a good idea - something I like to routinely do. your grist looks well thought out for this enterprise.

Firstly in terms of yeast, I would suggest you use nottingham as it's clean and brings hop flavours to the fore. SO4 will dull hop flavours and US05's character will confuse your results.

I would go for a BU:GU of 3:4

so half my bitterness goes in as fwh, then twice as many hops at 15 mins for the other half and an ounce more goes in for the 80C steep.

First gold is a nice single hop to play with, also I would not just limit your self to S-04 as there are so may great English yeast available these days

I would go with a clean yeast at first. Then knowing what to expect from each hop you'll be able to tell how the character of different yeasts work with the hops.
I'm just here for the beer.

For single hops i always use Nottingham first as it's neutral and doesn't get in the way of the hop flavour and then try S04 or windsor to see the difference (sadly if the beer was good there isn't always anything to use for comparison by the time the next ones ready!!)
