San Miguel

This was my 3rd brew in 5 days 8) - the other 2 brews were All Grain 6X to boost the family christmas stocks.

Any way someone kindly donated a Youngs Lager kit to me and I remembered the following recipe tucked away at the back of Dave Lines book (plus my amendments)

SAN MIGUEL 20 litres (23l)

Edme Lager Kit 1.8kg ( Youngs 1.5kg)
Golden syrup 1kg
Hallertau hops 15g
Lager yeast

Follow instructions as per normal kit dissolving the sugar and golden syrup at the same time as the lager malt.

Then simmer the hops in 2 litres of water for 10 minutes and then sieve liquor in to the fermenter.

I added 1kg of white sugar as well as my lager kit was smaller and I wanted 23 litres not 20. The smell from the fermenter this morning is fantastic - has anyone tried this recipe before ?

I was thinking of making this. How did it turn out?

I brewed that about 25 years ago  I remember being favourably impressed at the time. I am sure it is a good way of improving a Youngs lager kit.

I think the reason I remember it was the large proportion of golden syrup in the recipe. If I recall correctly it gave rather an unusual but pleasant flavour, not close to San Miguel, but very drinkable. I don't think I have used golden syrup since then, probably that is why I remember it. I brewed a good few Dave Line recipes in those days and it was down to him that I progressed to AG.

This one looks like a good way of sprucing up a cheap lager kit. Pity I didn't find it before I dumped 1kg of BKE into the kit someone gave me.

Almost a year on.....was it any good?
Planning - Not for a long while

Fermenting - I'm Done

Bottle Maturing - Hobgoblin, Fullers ESB, American Stout, TOP, Fullers London Porter, Bandini Black IPA

Drinking - Still...Whiskey
