boiling

hello,
just got a beer brewing book and read that you should boil the contents of the can and sugars in a pan for 45 mins before adding it to the fv. i though it was ok to just boil some water and mix it all together in the fv.

does boiling for 45 mins have any advantages? is it worth doing?

personally I wouldn't boil a kit, it'll destroy any delicate hop flavours/aromas the kit may have, the only reason to boil I would think was sanitation, but if you have good clean practices, for example, cleaning the lid of the kit tin with sanitiser then rinsing before opening and the same for the tin opener, I don't think there would be any problem.

I seem to remember that kits produced 20 odd years ago always recommended that you boil the supplied malt extract so perhaps you have a very old book.

All you need to do now is to stand the tin(s) some hot water for 5-10 minutes to make it easier to pour into the fv and then add 6 pints of boiled water and mix thoroughly.

Maybe they were talking about boiling liquid malt extract rather than a kit? In any case unless the destructions say boil, and they probably won't, then I wouldn't.
