You will learn 10x more by reading 'Brewday' threads and AG brewing threads here. I have many books and whilst they sort of answer various queries in bit form here and there, they don't show the full picture.
As a first point of call :- http://uk-homebrew.tripod.com/index.html
You'll get 10x more experience out of that than you will any book.

A guide to craft brewing by John Alexander is probably about the 'best' available that deals with the UK . . . There are a few mistakes in the book, and it is a bit of a stodgy read.
A much lighter read, but based for the US Market, and with a lot more downright errors is John Palmers How to brew.
As others have said you can learn a lot from the forums . . . personally using the book as a grounding and then looking up the forum for the bits you don't understand is probably the best way to g

Another interesting book, at least for giving you lots of ideas about different beers to brew, is Radical Brewing. It's another American book and is light on technique but it's one of my favourite brewing books.

Brewing Classic Styles is a great recipe book....again American. I've made several recipes from it and they've all been great.
