Noxious gases

Post by clatters69 » Tue Dec 02, 2008 8:27 pm

I am 2 days into a new brew. All appears to be going well and the beer is at that very fast fermenting stage with a thick layer of froth. I had a quick peek under the lid this morning and was foolish enough to press down on ther plastic lid whilst my nose was very close to the open edge of the FV, forcing a blast of gas into my face. The blast shot up my nose and made me reel backwards in a state of dizziness! I assume that this is not unusual?

By the way, which gases would they be? Carbon dioxide, obviously, but presumably some other gases too?

Not a word to Mrs Clatters69, but I tried another sniff when I got back from work. It didn't seem quite so strong this time, unless my tolerance has increased!

CO2 released from a fermenter wont make any significant difference to the levels in the room.

when working at a certain brewery in tadcaster over the summer, it wasn't uncommon to find dead pigeons under the FVs. i can only imagine this was from the carbon dioxide been produced!
