John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
I have just tried my John Bull Irish Stout and have to say i am very impressed. I was thinking of trying the Coopers Stout after reading Mitch's review. Has anyone tried them both if so could you post your preference many thanks.

Re: John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
I think we all have to concede that there is only 1 true maker of stout, and that's Coopers. Anything else is a pale imitation.
Re: John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
Well i've got both maturing now, but i havn't tried either, but i hear the John Bull is the closest homebrew kit to guiness?

Oh god! Is it?!

Guinness is insipid, tasteless dish water, compared to Coopers Stout. Why on earth bother brewing anything imitating That?

Re: John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
I knew your reply would be something similar to that!
But don't take my word for it, thats only what i've heard via reviews.
I can give ye my own, ye'll just have to wait til its matured, around the end of january

Benson_JV; I'd gladly send ye a can of " Guinness ". Keep it sat beside ye Coopers keg. Then, comes the great day, pour a pint of each. Taste the Guinness. Form an opinion. Rinse.
Then try the Coopers ....! (" OMFG!
")
Later; Empty the rest of the Guinness down the sink. Crush the can and put it in the recyclables bin.
Meanwhile; Is that an Empty FV ye have there ....?

I've tried both and prefer Muntons Imperial Stout.
I know this wasnt the question but this is my kit stout of choice. Having said that, I didnt try Ditchs coopers recipe and made mine with beer enhancer rather than DME.
I think I'd still go for the Muntons though (sorry Ditch)

Sorry?
After what you've just said?
Oh dear, I fear this is going to turn nasty . . . .

Softlad - I've only made Munton's Imperial Stout up to now but I must say I think it is fantastic - really chocolatey. Not as bitter as some stouts but that's OK. Anyway I feel I have to try Coopers next, but for now I'm planning on enjoying my Munton's over Christmas.

ok ... I had my fingers crossedBlackBag wrote:Sorry?

Of all the kits I've made, this will be the only one I will consider making again now that I am brewing AG. I brewed stouts pretty much expecting mediocre results, regardless of the kit and additional ingredients. On first tasting the Muntons Imperial I thought I was in for something special once it had chance to condition. I wasnt wrong !

I reckon i might try the first pint on christmas eve, a special occasion for a special stout.
It is! Well spotted Ditch

I'm waiting til next saturday to brew the Edme Bitter now, cannie be bothered to brew over christmas, im going to relax for a week and drink the produce already made

Re: John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
Well i've just tried a couple pints of John Bull.
Overall i prefer the Coopers i think.
The john bull though, has a far heftier mouthfeel (may be because i made the coopers with normal sugar and the john bull is a 3KG kit) so i find i cant drink near as much john bull as coopers, the john bull makes it too heavy to drink more than a couple 3 or so pints of. Whereas the coopers i can and have had 7/8 in a sitting easy.
It is a very nice pint either way...but yes i prefer coopers...plus its cheaper

Re: John Bull Irish Stout vs Cooper Stout.
When I brewed kits, I tried a few stout kits and preferred Coopers kit mainly because it was easy to convert it into a dry stout or oatmeal stout, or an American variant such as Sierra Nevada etc etc...
