AG#16 Lager

Post by MartialAnt » Tue Dec 30, 2008 3:18 pm

On with another brew. Its soooo much easier brewing when you have a boiler. Too bloody easy! This time though ive been told the kitchen is out of bounds as i dont need to use the cooker ever again in brewing. So its now the utility room / dog house. Farking freezing!!! Good idea though as my boiler gives off loads of steam so it needs to be near a door.

Anyway the recipe is Horden Hillbillys lager

2.784kg Lager malt
398g Caramalt
398 Flaked maize
500g Glucose

My start volume 34L
Finish volume 25L
Estimated Og 1045 [-o< (my drunken guesstimate).

But then i used a different hoppage.

Full boil
Hallertau 10g
Saaz 10g
Northern Brewer 20g

Last 20mins
Hallertau 15g
Saaz 15g

Flame off 80c
Hallertau 20g
Saaz 20g
Northern Brewer 20g

The hoppage is the same as the last 2 lagers ive done, being AG#7 & AG#14. AG#7 was divine even though i didnt know what i was doing. Used wrong malts in it.

Looks like you're having a good brewday, MA. 8)

Are you going to use a proper lager yeast and ferment cool?

Hi Jim. Im using s-23 Lager yeast & the brew room temp is around 15c at the highest daytime temp. Unless its in the util room / dog house thats as cool as it gonna get. Dont really want to ferment in there as its quite doggy. Dont like having to brew in there. Its where the dog dries out after running on the beach. quite dusty/sandy. At the mo its like an operating theatre coz im brewing. Dont wants the mutt drinking my brew either.

Oh out of interest i just got a record score 208 on bowling. :D

Awww don't call him a mutt - he looks really cute (and more well behaved than my flatcoats - cant have them in the room when playing on the WII cos they keep thinking I am throwing a ball and launch themselves at the telly)

He's a Mrs schmeichel & she is the most chilled dog as long as she's had an hour solid chasing birds on the beach. If not she runs around the house like she's on fire. Go's mental. The past 20 days was a nightmare as she was in season & its been near impossible to take her out.
Cant work out if she's hard or stupid. She was swimming in the sea at 11:30 this morning. Fookin nuts.

Not long until cooling off time. Getting ready. Just found out that the hosepipe is frozen solid, so im having to boil a kettle to defrost it.

I had that recently too, well, the outside tap was frozen up. Luckily I managed to coax it into life before the IC needed use, but it gave me a bit of a panic as I thought I wouldn't be able to cool the brew!

Looks like a good brewday. 8)

Ended up with 23L @ 1047. Used loads of water, lost 11L. Was only a 60 min boil as well.
Only have 20L in the FV. I drained all the trubby wort into a DJ & waited for it to settle thendrained that off to another DJ giving me 3L more.

Why am i losing so much liquid?
