Is it me or have I just go used to brewing, as it looks more complicated that what I do in brewing up the standard kits! LOL

has anyone tasted one though? i remember trying one that someone had done for wine and it was gross. the ones i have seen have been for the same money as a normal beer kit , would be a shame to put someone off brewing from a bad experience and saving a few pennies.

Mr. Beer was my first brewing kit. Got it from my pappy for Christmas last year. I have to say, the canned kits they provide never turned out well. But I still use the Mr. Beer keg-fermenter thing regularly. it works great to primary ferment a small (2.5 gal) batch. I do my small brews in it (some pale ales, brown ale, ordinary bitters, and my first mild ale).

Course, I suppose there are lots of cheaper alternatives for a primary...

It always looked a bit flimsy to me Monk, I suppose the fermenter cant be that bad if you are still using it.

I'll agree with that. It's molded like a little brown keg, for goodness' sake! But even though I'm always surprised, it continues to churn out good batches.

There was a 'micro-brewery' that I was given for christmas about 5 years ago. This was my first attempt at homebrweing (if you can call it that).

There was a gold coloured keg a bottle of powder and a plastic bag. The lid of the keg was a pump!

The idea was to dissolve the powder in tap water and fill the keg. Well, the powder refused to dissolve no matter how much I shook the bottle (now filled with water). This meant that there were a few clumps in it. After about 20 minutes and very sore arms I had managed to disolve most of the stuff.

This was poured into the plastic bag (already in keg) and topped up with several more bottles of water.

Then the magic occured. About 14 days later you had beer.

It was quite amazing really. I still don't quite understand how the makers can market this piss water as beer. The stuff was DISGUSTING.

To make things worse, the first pint I drew off went into my 'frozen mug' (you know the ones filled with gel/water that you freeze to keep your drinks cold without adding ice). Well, it managed to start freezing the piss water. I guess that means there was very very little alcohol in there!!

Now since there was no carbonation, the only way to get the beer out was to pump up the keg. And you all know what that means (or should). The way I was dispensing my beer was pumping AIR into it. Yup, after about 2 days this piss water was now well and trully oxidised and tasted even worse!!

I threw the whole thing out and that was it.

When I then told the wife I was starting Homebrewing (the real way!) she thought it would be a fad and I would spend all this money on kit just to quit after a couple of brews. She based this on my reluctance to brew anything else with my 'micro brewery'!!!!!
