Geordie bitter/edme bitter stuck fermentation??

Post by goater46 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 8:00 pm

I wondered whether anybody could help me please. I have made geordie bitter and edme bitter today but each attempt to rehydrate the yeast failed miserably. So I hav'nt put the rehydrated yeast in at all, so I have 2 fermenting bins with both bitters in wort form with brewing belts around them. I have not got any back up yeast and cant get to a homebrew shop until the morning. So I would like to know if I can save the brews tomorrow, and retry rehydrating by using a particular yeast? I havnt got the foggiest how to go about it. I tried a couple of brews before Christmas, and they did not work, so I am a bit desperate but determined to persevre. To ensure this could somebody tell me in step by step form how to rehydrate yeast properly, I have followed the instructions on the forum but I dont actually know how and what the yeast should look like and how to introduce into the beers. Please help Im losing the will to brew!!!! David

Get two sachets of S04 from the homebrew shop and chuck a packet in each fermenter and stir with a sanitised plastic spoon. Job done.

Just ask for two packets of S04, the guy will know what you mean and it should come to less than £3. If he hasn't got any of that (highly unlikely) then ask for two packets of Nottingham instead, again similarly priced.

Incidentally, just to add to this but why are you messing about rehydrating? I made a Geordie kit before Xmas which has turned out great (for a kit anyway) and the instructions said to simply chuck the dried yeast in, which I duly did. Where are you getting the idea that you must rehydrate it first? You're just making your life unnecessarily complicated.
