Primary fermentation in the dark?

Post by scottish69 » Mon Jan 12, 2009 5:53 pm

Hi Guys - ive been doing my primary fermentations out in my dining room... i dont cover the fermenter with any towels or anything to restrict light into it - though it is a white plastic bin.

Should i cover the bin with towels?

Will that improve things?

Cheers!

Keeping beer in the dark is more of an issue when you move to extract or all grain were the bittering (alpha acids) is produced by boiling hops. Kits tend to use a chemical modified form of the alpha acids (the bittering component) which doesn't suffer from lightstrike.

Hah, I never knew that. I thought that all hops, or the AA in them are able to become lightstruck.

So presumably some of the mainstream breweries that offer beer in clear bottles use isomerised??? hop extracts instead of fresh hops?

Who'da thunk it?
