Ditch, what FG do you normally get using spray malt? Hopefully I've not completely cocked it up. Either way I'll have to brew up another batch to compare... What a shame

stout in the fermenter today at last. got some medium spray malt yesturday as recommended only got 500g dark malt before crimbo my patience was running out to get it brewing considered putting sugar and the dark malt but i resisted the temptation and waited and done it right.just waiting for the yeast to kick off now.

To be perfectly frank, Operator (and I've had Manhattan Transfer in my bloody head ever since spotting ye handle a few threads ago!) my eyes are so f*cked I can barely See the Hydro' readings. Thus I don't really concern myself with them. Start or finish.

Man invented beer by god alone knows what process. He then went on to perfect it. Some would say he had it just about spot on a century or two ago. I wonder if they had stupid little glass things with tiny and confusing numbers on then then?

So, quite honestly, I don't know what FG I get. I Never know what SG I get, so it's irrelevant. It tastes good. I like it. Does for me

a slight eruption while i was at work, i got a text saying brown foam and water coming from fv and making a noise will it explode!! ha

cleaned the offending area but it does not seem to be bubbling??

It won't be because it looks like that FV is leaking all over. I have the same one and get the same problem, hard to get an airtight seal. I've never bothered, just left as is and it's been fine.

cheers it leaked out of i hole i cut to for the cable for an immersion heater but not used it so the foam came out of the hole god knows what would have happened with out the little hole. i have put selotape over it the air lock does not seem to be bubbling but if its got a leak then thats obviously the reason think i will get big 33ltr bucket for this next time ha

I've just discovered that even the 33L one can't contain it. Admittedly it isn't quite as explosive as some others but it's still coming through the airlock...

I know I said I would stop worrying, but mine has stuck at 1014 now. I might just have to keg it and hope for the best. It smells great though! Embalmer, how's yours?

1014 isnt stuck, stop worrying and instead devote the mental anguish into drinking power - this hobby is all about chilling out, not winding up!!

The more spray malt you use the higher it will finish, if you want a dry beer then your looking for about 1008-1000 range, if you want a beer with body id say your looking at 1012-1008 range, if you like a little more body then 1016-1012. anything about 1016/1018 is stuck id say (even then you get a nice pint, just a tad sweet).

you can control this when using kits (to a certain extent) by using different yeasts (US05 - Nottingham - S04), and what sugars your using (glucose/candy sugar/spray malt/LME).

Get your 1014 stout into somthing sealable and forget it for about 72 hours, then enjoy (i find my coopers stout drinkable after 3 days!, better left for 4 tho
