Leave to settle in bottling bucket?

Post by scottish69 » Fri Jan 16, 2009 8:20 am

Hi All,

I normally syphon from my primary FV into a bottling bucket and then immediately bottle using a stick.

Should i be leaving the beer in the bottling bucket for a week to settle out further?

I also bottle usually after 7 days - ive heard some of you guys leave it int eh primary FV for a minumum of 10 days even if your ferment has finished after just 3/4?

The reason i ask is im getting a bout 5mm of guff (technical term) at the bottom of my bottles and want to ensure i dont get any off flavours from it. I know it will never completely go im just trying to perfect my technique!

Cheers!

Nope, bottle straight away

But I don't do secondary so i get it a good two week or three in the primary a week maybe a little short if the fermentation has been lagging or the yeast are still cleaning up their by products

Putting it in another bucket for a couple of days would clear it and take it off the yeast in the bottom of the fv. Its not really needed but would result in less yeast in your bottles. Ive not had any off flavours from the yeast in the bottle so i wouldnt worry about it.
10 days in the FV is just a standard rule of thumb for most people even if fermentation has ended. it allows the beer to clear a little before bottling.

hi again.

another question ive been pondering myself.

i was under the impression that you needed the yeast still floating in the the brew for secondary fermentation when you bottle it.
can you drain off the beer from the yeast into a bottling barrel/ whatever, allow this to clear a bit for a few days/add finings, then bottle with your
priming sugar and still achieve a satisfactory sf in the bottles?

As far as i know yes you can, you will never get rid of all the yeast out of your beer. But ive not had personal experience cos i dont have a secondry bucket.
