Shefford Wheat Beer Recipe.

Post by Robdog » Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:00 pm

Im interested in trying this as ive never had a wheat beer before

Shefford Wheat Beer 5 gallon batch OG 1050 ABV 5%

HALCYON PALE MALT 2390 gms
WHEAT MALT 2390 gms

HOPS boil time 90 minutes no EBU given so 20 EBU German Wheat beers are low in EBU.

FUGGLES 38 gms

Yeast of your choice It is not stated if Shefford use a genuine wheat beer yeast.

Its says choice of yeast but im unsure if a normal ale yeast ie Nottingham would be any good for this beer?

The EBU seems low aswell so i cojld possibly add a few more hops.

Has anyone else tried this recipe?

I have not made this recipe, but i did drink it at a beer festival a couple of years ago. To me it didn't strongly resemble wheat beers in the form of a Belgian wit or German weizen. It was more like a slightly wheaty ale! I presume it is made with an ale yeast on that basis, a wheat beer yeast would have added flavours that i didn't find.

If you have not tried a wheat beer and are serious about making one why not try a couple of commercial examples before you dive in.
Drinking: Double IPA (Mr President Clone)
Drinking: London Porter (5%)
Drinking: Belgian Dubbel (8%)
Conditioning: West Coast Red (5.6%)
Conditioning: Nelson & Friends Series No.1 (Mosaic)
FV: A few spiders
Planning: Everything else!
