Mash Tun Insulation

Hello all i have a cunning plan.I am thinking about wrapping my grain barrel ultra large mash tun with hard board.I will leave a space between then fill with spray foam probably make a lid also.How many inches thick should i make it any thoughts welcome.Cheers

Tha foam is a very good insulator so you probably won't need much. Modern domestic hot water cylinders are covered in about and inch or two of foam and they feel cool to the touch even when they are full of hot water.

I have done the spray foam thing on my picnic box mash tun. Seperate the two halves remove the polystyrene, squirt in the foam filler, put the two halves back together and leave to set. Superbly insulated mash tun. I will do the lid when I get some more foam.

You can buy mega tubes of that spray foam from Jewsons for about the same price as you can get a small tube from DIY stores like Focus and B&Q etc...

It would be good to find a source of the foam that you mix up as a two part concoction (ever seen Mythbusters? - they used it).

Hello eskimobob the foam i bought was from one of them budget shops.Double the size nearly of B&Q stuff for £4 each.I have already used three and still need another two so it is a bit of an investment.Saying that it is rather larger than a normal mash tun. I also seen them using it on Mythbusters that stuff would have been great. cheers

Would highly recommend CFS, I've used them loads for resin, glassfibre, acetone etc for boat repairs. Good prices, quick delivery.
